Building Blocks for Peer Success:Training Peer Trainers Program
The Building Blocks for Peer Success Training Peer Trainers Program (TOT) is a training for experienced trainers, peer leaders and peer program directors offered free of charge under a grant funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s HIV/AIDS Bureau through the Division of Training and Technical Assistance. The training is being held in conjunction with the release of the Building Blocks for Peer Success Training of Trainers Toolkit, which contains specific curricula, best practices and individual lesson modules compiled from four organizations experienced in the training of HIV-positive peers to engage people living with HIV/AIDS in care.
The purpose of the TOT is to build capacity nationally to train HIV-positive peer educators/advocates/counselors to work as part of inter-disciplinary teams to support people living with HIV to engage and remain in health care. Individuals who participate in this training will:- Learn to use the TOT toolkit to plan and design a training curriculum that meets the needs of the peers in their community/region;
- Participate in training and teach-back sessions designed to enhance facilitation and training skills.
A maximum of 20 people will participate in each TOT program, preferably in teams of two people who will co-facilitate subsequent peer trainings in their city or region; however, applications are reviewed on an individual basis. The first TOT (now closed to new applicants) will be held in Nashville, TN from May 18, 2009 through May 21. Priority will be given to individuals with previous experience as trainers and work in peer programs. We highly recommend that all participants receive some training in facilitation skills prior to attending the TOT. It is expected that all TOT participants will return to their communities, plan and implement peer training programs, and participate in an evaluation of the training experience.
