Are the peers in your program full- or part-time?

Generally, the peers in the programs we work with are part time. WORLD’s peer advocates work 20 – 32 hours per week. At Kansas City Free Health Clinic, the peers start as volunteers, then move to monthly stipends and eventually become part-time employees. At Harlem Hospital, peer workers are usually hired as part-time workers and paid a stipend.

The peer program at Christie’s Place was experiencing relapse and burnout among its peers, who were working full time. In response, the peer role was recast as a part-time position, and a clinical supervisor was hired to provide support and help peers deal with issues as they arise. This improved the situation and the program continues to use this model.
