Project Title: Oral Health Demonstration Project

Goals/Objectives:

To provide care to 100 newly diagnosed HIV+ individuals at UNC and compare with patients who receive routine dental care.

Target Population:

100 newly diagnosed HIV patients identified in the UNC HIV Network

Program Intervention/Services:

The project will provide comprehensive oral health care and routine dental recall visits for people living with HIV/AIDS. In addition, there will be training of medical providers and patients on oral hygiene and examination of oral manifestation of HIV/AIDS dental patients. A clinical team will be developed and will be comprised of dentists, ID physicians, dental residents, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and social workers to promote oral health care linkages for newly diagnosed patients. The project will also provide continuing education services for dentists, physicians and allied health professionals to facilitate outreach and oral health care services for patients.

Program Staff:

3 dentists, 1 hygienist, 1 physician, and a project coordinator/dental assistant.

Partners & Linkages to Medical Care:

UNC School of Dentistry will collaborate with the UNC Hospitals’ Infectious Disease and Dental Clinics in Chapel Hill; Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC; and Lincoln Community Health Center in Durham, NC.

Consumer Involvement:

UNC-CH will establish a local consumer advisory board
