Project Title: Project “Keep Your Smile Sharp” (Project KYSS)

Goals/Objectives:
To improve access to and utilization of routine HIV oral health care and oral health education and prevention in community settings.
Geographic Setting:
Urban
Location:
Two sites in Washington Heights-Inwood (northern Manhattan) that are conveniently located to also serve the Harlem community.
Target Population:
HIV+ individuals who have been difficult to reach and engage in care, particularly the minority populations of Washington Heights/Inwood and Harlem (85% Black and Hispanic), where HIV diagnosis rates are equal to or far higher than the overall rate in NYC (45.6/ 100,000 in 2005). Project KYSS plans to reach 432-480 individual patients in the first six months, increasing to 864-960 patients in the subsequent years of the grant.
Program Intervention/Services:
Project KYSS will focus on several key elements:
- Provision of comprehensive oral health care services in two community sites; the project will establish a dental clinic for HIV+ individuals (one day/week/site) by leasing space from a private dentist, and a dentist and dental assistant will offer a full range of oral health services from preventive and diagnostic through oral surgery.
- Outreach and marketing to CBOs and HIV service providers to recruit and retain patients in care.
- Community education and prevention through partnerships with various CBOs; and
- Linkage to HIV primary care and support services through coordination with other inter-disciplinary providers.
Program Staff:
A dentist will provide comprehensive oral health care services. A dental assistant will provide assistance with oral health procedures, patient education and counseling, and appointment tracking. The Project Coordinator and Dental Director will lead outreach and marketing efforts with support from the CCC staff, and consumer advisory board.
Partners & Linkages to Medical Care:
CCC will link patients who do not have consistent primary health care services to one of its two outpatient clinics. Letters of collaboration have been signed with several local CBOs, including: Alianza Dominicana, SMART, Hispanic AIDS Forum, and African Services Committee; outreach to other community agencies is ongoing.
Consumer Involvement:
CCC has an established consumer advisory board.
