Project Title: Project Save Our Smiles (SOS)

Organizational Setting:

The Sandhills Medical Foundation (SMF) is a federally-funded community health center providing primary medical care for residents of Chesterfield, Kershaw, Lancaster and Sumter counties.

Goals/Objectives:

To expand access to dental health care in a six county area, designated as a dental health professional shortage area, through the use of an oral health mobile unit providing services to 7 rural community health center sites. Other project components include patient outreach and testing services.

Geographic Setting:

Rural; mobile van.

Location:

Chesterfield, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lancaster, and Sumter counties in South Carolina.

Target Population:

176 low-income and underserved HIV+ individuals in a six county rural area.

Program Intervention/Services:

Project SOS will provide oral health care services including preventative, diagnostic, restorative, periodontic, prosthodontic, endodontic, oral medications, oral surgery, emergency care and oral health education/promotion.

Program Staff:

A specially trained team including a dentist, dental hygienist and dental assistant.

Partners & Linkages to Medical Care:

Project SOS collaborators include the Richland Community Health Care Association, Inc (RCHCA), and the Columbia Oral Health Clinic (COHC). RCHCA is a federally funded health center also funded to provide services to homeless persons living with HIV/AIDS. COHC – providing oral health services to PLWH/A since1999 – will be contracted to provide consultation for the staff of Project SOS and will develop an HIV Oral Health Education packet.
