Project Title: Oregon Rural Alliance of Dental Leadership (ORAL)

Organizational Setting:

The HIV Alliance is a small AIDS Service Organization coordinating efforts between community health centers and a community college (for oral care services).

Goals/Objectives:

To identify and recruit people living with HIV in need of dental care, and provide reduced cost, comprehensive oral health care. To provide specialized training to dental and hygiene students. In addition the project will develop and strengthen outreach efforts to support the transportation of consumers to a centralized clinic for oral health care and dental services.

Location:

Eighty percent of potential clients are in a rural area of southern Oregon located along the Interstate 5 corridor. The remaining 20% are located in a rural setting outside of the I-5 corridor.

Target Population:

HIV Alliance will serve a diverse population of HIV+ residents; there are 718 people living with HIV/AIDS in a fifteen-county region of southern Oregon, and the project will provide dental services to 200 consumers within the first year of the project.

Program Intervention/Services:

Through the training of dental/hygiene students, the project will provide extended dental clinic hours to HIV/AIDS consumers. Services will include the transportation of consumers from a wide geographic area.

Program Staff:

1 Project Coordinator, 1 Dentist, 1 dental hygienist, 20 second year dental hygiene students, and 2 dental assistants.

Partners & Linkages to Medical Care:

The project will include coordination of services of the Community Health Centers of Lane County and the Lane County Community College.

Consumer Involvement:

The project will establish a planning and operation council that will include consumers and service providers.
