Project Title: Greater Wisconsin HIV Dental Services Initiative

Organizational Setting:

ARWC is a Milwaukee-based AIDS Service Organization (ASO) providing comprehensive medical care, dental care, mental health, case management, legal services, food pantries, housing services and prevention services in 9 offices located throughout Wisconsin. The grant is specifically for services in the Green bay office and dental reimbursement for services provided by a network of dentists in the greater Wisconsin area.

Goals/Objectives:

To increase access to dental care services in a rural, sparsely populated, 51 county area in greater Wisconsin by establishing both a dental clinic and dental reimbursement program. The dental clinic will serve 105 HIV+ during the first year. Both programs are projected to serve a total of 500 HIV+ dental care consumers annually.

Target Population:

989 people living with HIV/AIDS in the proposed service area of which nearly 50% of these individuals are uninsured and 27% have Medicaid coverage.

Program Intervention/Services:

ARCW has designed a hybrid model of care that includes the establishment of a new dental clinic located in its Green Bay office. An additional component includes the development of an HIV dental reimbursement program for services as well as mileage reimbursement for eligible patients for dental appointments. Oral health education will occur during most dental visits.

Program Staff:

Dental director, principal investigator, program evaluator. Dental services will be provided by a dentist, dental hygienist and dental assistant.

Partners & Linkages to Medical Care:

ARWC has links to local health departments, infectious disease physicians, social service providers including community-based organizations and a dental oral health partnership.

Consumer Involvement:

ARCW conducts annual patient surveys, consumer focus groups and other means of gaining consumer input for program development and improvement.
